Environment is no longer a secondary concern...

as demonstrated by the climate change and the trend is clearly reflected in a framework of increasingly stringent regulations. Indeed, even if environmental sustainability guides decisions around all infrastructure development, large part of the world still has to reach the access to basic services and not everywhere the most modern, effective and costly technologies can be adopted.

The environmental engineering has therefore a difficult task in merging new environmental performances and economic considerations in the clear perspective that investments in environment are of the highest priority but that the budgetary constraints are not always adapted accordingly.

Environmental engineering has also the very important task to look after the past by remediating the environmental damages and the future by planning sustainable steps which could lead to a more climate-resilient context.
